Surrealism Movement
The Surrealism movement originated in the early 1920’s. The most influential artist of this movement in my opinion is Frida Kahlo. Unlike others, she wasn’t always a painter. Kahlo was involved in a serious bus accident which left her with a broken spine, ribs, pelvis, leg, foot and even a dislocated shoulder. Her passion for came about during her recovery. Most of her paintings were self-portraits. Her reasoning behind the self-portraits was that she was alone so often during her recovery, she knew herself more than anything else. Frida was not afraid to put emphasis on her unibrow and light mustache, which is what made her such a great painter. She knew that everyone has their own imperfections, just like any piece of art. These details are clearly visible in her self-portrait, “Self-Portrait with Necklace of Thorns” (Frida Kahlo). Kahlo places specific detail not only in her eyebrows and mustache but in the nature oriented background, maybe suggesting that natural beauty is the strongest beauty of all. Other influential artists of the Surrealism movement include Joan Miro, Man Ray and Giorgio de Chirico.
