The Romanticism movement originated in Europe during the late 18th century. Much of the artwork during this time period depicted landscapes and stormy weather, and dark and gloomy architecture. A popular landscape artist of the Romanticism movement is joseph Mallord William Turner. J.M.W Turner is well known for his oil and watercolor paintings (J.M.W Turner). At the time, many people thought his work was controversial for being too “wild”. His painting, Calais Pier, is my favorite. It depicts the horrors and threats being at sea during a storm. The darkness of the skies comes off as strikingly beautiful, even more majestical, the detail of the waves. The white highlights really make the waves appear crashing and powerful. Turner even focused on the detail of the ship passengers in the distance. He uses many different shades and tints to make each aspect just that much more realistic. Other artists that were popular during the Romanticism movement include Eugene Delacroix, John Constable and Ivan Aivazowsky.
