The Mannerism Movement originated in Italy and spread through much of Europe. It lasted from 1520 to approximately 1600. Mannerism is also known as the art of the late renaissance. Manneristic Art is usually characterized by "...distortion of the human figure, a flattening of pictorial space, and a cultivated intellectual sophistication"(Mannerism: Bronzino). Once important artist of this time period is Franciabigio. In his piece "Head of the Madonna" he uses a lot of detail in the features of her face to make her look almost realistic. This artwork was painted on wood, giving it a more authentic look and truly showcasing his ability to use details on no matter what kind of canvas he is using. Other significant artists of this the Mannerism movement include Michelangelo and Raphael.
