The futurism movement originated in the early 20th century in Italy. Many of the pieces of work depicted the ideals and expectations of the future. Artists often worked with bright colors and sharp images. Many paintings are focused on cars and other types of automobiles and even urban scenes and landscapes. Umberto Boccioni was not only an influential painter of the Futuristic movement but also an influential sculptor (Futurism). Boccioni started initially with drawings and then gradually moved on to paintings and sculptures. My favorite piece of work by Boccioni is his painting, “The Laugh”. The image is very dynamic with many bright colors. Complementary colors are placed next to each other, making the sharp images and details pop out more dramatically to the eye. The artwork is more abstract than it is completely organized. Other artists of the futuristic movement include Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini and Joseph Stella.
