Abstract Impressionism is a style of art that originated in the early 1940's, mainly in New York. The artists of this time period were known for creating works with spontaneity and improvisation (Abstract Expressionism). "The Woman" by Willem de Kooning uses bright colors to create an unorganized yet recognizable image of a woman. Kooning said, "Art never seems to make me peaceful or pure. I always seem to be wrapped in the melodrama of vulgarity. I do not think of inside or outside-or art in general-as a situation of comfort"(Willem de Kooning). This could explain why he used harsh brush strokes to create the image, Kooning may have been channeling his emotions into his artwork.
