The Realist movement began in the 19th century. Much of the art of this time depicted the real lives of laborers and hard workers. This movement was triggered by the Romantic era. One of the most popular artists of the Realist movement is Gustave Courbet, a French painter born who lived from June 10, 1819 until December 31, 1877. Courbet is best known for making social statements stand out in his work. Gustave Courbet’s piece, Seaside, is just one of his many pieces of landscape. When looked at closely, it is obvious that the painting is filled with detail. Courbet even put emphasis on the people in the background. After studying other pieces of his work, it seems that Gustave Courbet gets a feeling of relaxation in nature. More specifically, Seaside is quite a calm painting, with light colors. He is also known for painting scandalous and controversial yet realistic images of women. (Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History). Other artists of the realist movement include Gustave Courbet, Jean-François Millet, Honoré Daumier, Pierre August Renoir and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.
