Cubism was introduced in the early twentieth century. The first artists to put a meaning to this movement were Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Picasso and Braque were later joined by other artists, including Jean Metzinger, the artist of "Table by a Window". "Their favorite motifs were still lifes with musical instruments, bottles, pitchers, glasses, newspapers, playing cards, and the human face and figure. Landscapes were rare" (Cubism). Cubist artists did not believe in traditional artwork, instead they created artwork with geometric shapes and abstract figures. Cubism was primarily centered around painting, until later on artists began sculptural and architectural work.
